There is growing frustration among residents living in Citywest/Saggart and Cheeverstown areas on the unreliability of the red line Luas tram. Anyone who has to commute is well aware of the capacity issues, unreliability and the re-routing of trams from Saggart to Tallaght. This re-routing and changing over at Belgard brings its own security and safety concerns to light.
Thanks to our local TD, John Lahart, I had the opportunity in November to raise the concerns of residents regarding the poor LUAS service to and from Saggart with the National Transport Authority.
I furnished them with a copy of the letter from Citywest Community Council to Transdev, a copy of Transdev’s unsatisfactory response and in addition a skyline view of Citywest, highlighting the numerous large scale developments currently under construction. These same developments with little or no parking provided, creating an over-reliance on the public transport system.
There is no doubt that the Luas is not providing a sufficient service for commuters. Myself and John endeavor to liaise with the relevant authorities to find solutions that will work for our community in Citywest, Saggart and Fortunestown.
Citywest is a fast growing neighbourhood and there is an urgent need for a public transport system that works, to support that growing community.
We hope that meeting with representatives from the NTA will highlight the issues of capacity, diverted trams & the need for a continuous line with no changeover at Belgard more frequently.
Work is continuing and I will update when we have any further information. Please see below a copy of the aforementioned letters.
