Commuter Frustrations with Red Line Luas: Need for Reliable Service

I am contacted regularly by residents regarding the poor service on the Red Line Luas. We are seeing trams that are bound for Saggart suddenly redirected to Tallaght without any prior notice. This leaves commuters stranded at Belgard, forced to wait for another Luas to continue their journey. It’s a daily frustration that’s adding unnecessary time to already long commutes.

With the substantial growth in residential development between Cheeverstown and Saggart, the current service is simply not sustainable. We need a reliable and uninterrupted service, especially during peak and off-peak times. It’s unacceptable that residents must routinely deal with service interruptions and extended commuting times.

I have written to both the NTA and the TII to make them aware of the ongoing daily struggles for commuters. I will keep residents updated on developments. I will also continue to push for a better service from LUAS.

  1. Hi Lynda,

Thank you for drawing attention to this issue.

Since the back to school rush, the luases are significantly worse. On early trams, the luas is full by saggart, it’s incredibly difficult to get a seat or to even get on the luas even one or two stops after the luas starts.

In order to not have to stand all the way into town, I’ve had to start getting earlier and earlier trams but to no avail.

There needs to be increased capacity or increased trams.

I would also agree with the issue you raised about the destination being changed without prior notice. I’ve also experienced frustration that sometimes you will not be told that a team is actually terminating at red cow, until you arrive to the red cow. Also, sometimes you may not be told that an issue has been resolved, so a lot of people get off at the red cow, only to find that the issue further along is resolved.

    The communication is non existent.

    Kind regards, Emily
